Six Days explores the challenge of facing change in an organisation. It follows the story of Bob Jones who for a handful of years has held the post of ‘change manager’ in a fairly large business. Bob has struggled with the usual problems of getting people to take notice of quality issues and the need to move with the times and improve. The twist is in the story’s opening where we find Bob in his bosses office arguing against the recommended change program devised by a group of business consultants.

The problem for Bob is that he’s the one who hired the consultants, and the consultants have come up with just the type of program that Bob has pushed through the business for the past three years. Ironically, just at the moment when his work seems to be paying off, and he’s finally got his bosses support Bob has cold feet, or maybe it’s hot fee and is convinced the program can’t work.

He’s in his bosses office arguing a complete about face, his thinking and reasoning turned upside down, arguing against everything he’s previously argued for, and he’s no idea why. All the logic he used to believe has been replaced by liittle more than a feeling that what he’s been doing, and what he’d been planning to continue, just isn’t right.

Naturally this doesn’t go down well with his boss, and Bob is soon facing the sack. He’s either got to get in line with the improvement program, or there’s no place for him in the company.

He has just six days in which to work out why his thinking has done a U-turn, and convince his boss to change, or put things back as they were, or be fired. The joy of the book is that we get to follow Bob on his journey in which he uncovers insight in the most unlikely of places. What he learns is of value to everyone in our fast changing world and helps explain why so much change effort achieves so little.
